Stellenbosch University celebrates Women’s Day

Stellenbosch University (SU) will be celebrating the sucesses and contributions of South African women to the prosperity and progress of the country with three events this coming week.

At the first event that will be taking place on Thursday 4 August, the SU's Alumni relations team acknowledges the successes of Stellenbosch Alumni with a insightful panel discussion with the well known actress and presenter, Elsabe Daneel.

The theme of the discussion is Maties women shatter the glass ceiling and will focus on the success of various alumni in their respective careers and how they managed to break through the so called glass ceiling.

The panellists are Ms Lizette Frank, founder of BEE Empowered & Labour Consultancy CC;Prof Rachel Jafta, from SU's Department of Economics, founder of Rachel`s Angels and co-founder and director of Econex; Dr Nomfundo Ngwenya, Head of SA Foreign Policy & African Drivers Programme; and Dr Sherylle Calder, visual skills and performance specialist.

The event will start at 18:00 at the Nooitgedact wine estate. Stellenbosch alumni that would like to attend the event can contact Marvin Koopman at 021 808 9265 or marvin@sun.ac.za.

Lunch programme

On Wednesday 10 August the Division of Community Interaction, the Beyers Naudé Centre for Public Theology and the Frederik Van Zyl Slabbert Institute for Student Leadership Development will be hosting a lunch hour programme in the JS Gericke Library Auditorium. The programme will start at 12:30.

Dr Trunette Joseph, Stellenbosch Alumnus and Deputy Director: Curriculum Development, Quality Assurance and Research at the Western Cape provincial government, will do the introduction for en Dr Rhoda Kadalie, the main speaker. Dr Kadalie is a former Commissioner of the South African Human Rights Commission and is currently director of the Impumelelo Innovations Award Trust. She is also a widely-published columnist for among others Business Day, Die Burger and Rapport. Guests can also look forward to a performance by the well known jazz, R&B and hip hop singer, activist and poet, Blaq Pearl.

A light lunch and fruit juice will be served.

Maties students

The Frederik van Zyl Slabbert Institute for Student Leadership Development will host a Women's Day event on 10 August at the Bodega restaurant at Dornier wine estate as part of its leadership programme, Women in Leadership, in honour of Prof Elize Botha, late chancellor of SU. More information about the event will be posted on MyMaties.

SU acknowledges its women achievers

In Saturday's edition of Die Burger and Cape Argus the University acknowledges its achieving women who not only make a contribution to the success of the University but also to the progress of the country.
